Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald
UK Ambassador to the US
"The World's Key Foreign Policy Challenges, Including the Long-Term Strategy for Afghanistan"

Ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald is the current British Ambassador to the United States, leading the Embassy in Washington and nine Consulates-General around the United States. He will be speaking at UC San Diego in a general lecture on September 29, 2009 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the Faculty Club’s Atkinson Pavilion as well as a student/faculty discussion from 11:00 AM until 11:30 AM in the Cognitive Science Building Room 180.

Before becoming Ambassador in Washington, Sheinwald served as Foreign Policy and Defence Adviser to Prime Minister Tony Blair from 2003-07, where he met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and was involved in talks for the release of British sailors being held captive by Iran. As the UK Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels from 2000-03, he was involved with the Libya-Gaddafi meetings.

Sheinwald was Europe Director in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) from 1998-2000. He has had a wide variety of other appointments in the FCO in London. From 1995-98, he was the FCO Press Secretary and Head of News Department. He held an earlier posting in the UK Representation from 1993-95, as Head of its Political and Institutional Section.

Sheinwald began his career in EU work as Deputy Head of the FCO's European Union Department from 1989-92. He was Deputy Head of the Foreign Office's Policy Planning Staff in 1987-89, responsible for transatlantic relations and other issues. Sheinwald had an earlier posting to Washington in 1983-87 as First Secretary (Political) in the Embassy.

His first foreign posting was in Moscow (1978-79), and he was Head of the Foreign Office's Anglo-Soviet Section in 1981-83. He also worked in London on the Japan Desk (1976-77) and on Zimbabwe (1979-81), including the Lancaster House Conference. More

Call for Submissions

Prospect, a new international affairs e-journal launched in February 2009, is accepting submissions. The journal serves as a forum for intelligent discourse by showcasing works created by UC San Diego students who wish to broaden their understanding of issues of contemporary and global relevance. The journal was co-founded by UCSD students Dipan Patel, in Political Sciences, and Ran Jiao, in Economics.

Prospect is currently issuing a call for submissions and accepts a variety of work, including but not limited to: academic papers (from previous classes), freelance articles, travelogues, photography, and films.
