IICAS European Studies Speaker Series
IICAS launched the European Studies Initiative in 2002 to build a focal point for faculty, students, and members of the San Diego community who share an interest in contemporary Europe. The central aim of the Initiative was the construction of a European Studies program at UCSD.

In the popular vote in the Italian general election of February 24-25, 2013, the center-left alliance of Pier Luigi Bersani only narrowly defeated the center-right alliance led by former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, 29.5% to 29.1%. The new anti-establishment Five Star Movement of comedian Beppe Grillo became a third force with 25.5% of the popular vote, but has refused to join in any coalition government. The centrist alliance of outgoing Prime Minister Mario Monti trailed with only 10.5% of the popular vote. With this political impasse in parliament, Giorgio Napolitano, the 87-year old President of the Republic, was re-elected for an unprecedented second term and has appointed Enrico Letta, the 46-year old moderate from a younger generation, Prime Minister of an interim government. Journalist and commentator on Italian politics, Alessandro Stille will examine the current state of Italian politics. Why does Italy appear to have lost its way? What went wrong? Why is Italy in such bad shape? Does Italy have a future?
Alexander Stille is the San Paolo Professor of International Journalism at Columbia University. Stille graduated with a B.A. from Yale University and earned an M.S. at Columbia. He has worked as a contributor to The New York Times, La Repubblica, The New Yorker magazine, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic Monthly, The New Republic, Correspondent, U.S. News & World Report, The Boston Globe, and The Toronto Globe and Mail.
He is the author of "Benevolence and Betrayal: Five Italian Jewish Families Under Fascism" (1991); "Excellent Cadavers: The Mafia and the Death of the First Italian Republic" (1995); "The Future of the Past" (2002); and "The Sack of Rome: How a Beautiful European Country with a Fabled History and a Storied Culture Was Taken Over by a Man Named Silvio Berlusconi" (2006).
Stille is the winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Award for best work of history (1992), Premio Acqui (1992), San Francisco Chronicle Critics Choice Award (1995), and the Alicia Patterson Foundation award for journalism (1996).
IICAS, the Institute for International, Comparative and Area Studies sponsors the European Studies Speaker Series at UC San Diego.
IICAS supports collaborative international research and area studies, and encourages interdisciplinary research, discussion and information exchange on international, comparative, and cross regional topics through its multiple lecture series.
